Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Basketball: Abraha’s hot shooting gets Tigers back to .500

LONGMONT — For the first few games of the season, Esrom Abraha’s minutes were limited.

But as the Holy Family Tigers struggled on the offensive end to score points, coach Pete Villecco was in search of a spark.

Enter Abraha, the catalyst.

The senior, who was instrumental in lifting his team earlier in the week against Greeley Central with his hustle and grit, found himself the focal point of the offense on Friday night at Skyline. After a stagnant first quarter and half, Abraha found his range and scored 14 of the Tigers 19 first half points — including three straight three-pointers in the closing moments of the half. The Tigers never relinquished their halftime lead and held on for a 46-39 win over the Falcon to level their record at 3-3.

And even though Abraha scored just once in the second half, his fearless shooting was contagious among his teammates and out of the halftime break and they scored 18 points in the quarter to grow their lead to 37-31 going to the fourth.

The offense went cold in the fourth and Skyline crept to within 37-36 with under three minutes to play. The Tigers (3-3 overall, 2-1 Northern League) would score their only field goal of the fourth at the 2:28 mark when Jackson Ward scored and was fouled. He completed the three-point play and the Holy Family lead grew back to two possessions.

After Abraha’s game-high 17, Blake Hammond chipped in with 10 points and Ward finished with 8.

In the first game of the night, the No. 2 ranked Holy Family girls made quick work of the winless Falcons, outscoring them 32-0 in the opening quarter.

The Tigers would roll to a 70-20 win on the strength of 21 points from senior Alyssa Wells. Freshman Essyence Contreraz came of the bench to score a season high 11 points.
