Boys Varsity Football · Football: Tigers beat Lutheran to claim Colorado crown

PARKER — The argument could have been made that the Lutheran Lions were the more tested of the two teams entering Friday night’s Colorado League championship game based on who they had played thus far.

Holy Family didn’t care.

The No. 6-ranked Tigers jumped on the No. 2 Lions early, a spot they had not been in all year, and never took their foot off the gas pedal in a 38-14 victory.

With the win over the No. 1 team in the latest CHSAA RPI standings, the Tigers (who were No. 5) claim the Colorado League title, move to 5-0 overall and all but lock up a spot in the Class 3A playoff field with one nonleague game to go in the regular season next Friday at home against Pueblo Centennial.

The Tigers took advantage of some short fields in the first quarter, after some costly Lions miscues.

Lutheran attempted a fake punt on its first possession and after coming up short, the Tigers promptly marched down the field and opened the scoring with a 4-yard Trevin Johnson touchdown run.

One the very next Lutheran possession, the Lions had trouble with their center-to-quarterback exchanges and the second high snap in a matter of four plays — this on on fourth down — forced Lutheran quarterback Clayton Jacobs to fall on the ball deep in his own territory.

Again, it didn’t take long for Johnson to make them pay again. This time the senior, who had five scores last week, went in from 11 yards to make it a quick 14-0 lead.

It would go to the half 17-7, but the Tigers — who got two interceptions from Jacob Lawver —  got the ball to start the third quarter and never allowed the home-standing Lions to creep any closer in the next 12 minutes.

Michael White went to work on the Lutheran secondary and was responsible for all three second half touchdowns. He connected with Oscar Sena and Liam Gray for third quarter scores and capped the scoring in the fourth with a 12-yard untouched run to pay dirt.
