Coed Varsity Cross Country · Cross country: Tigers dominate regional meet

BROOMFIELD — Like almost every other sport that has a regional tournament before the state (in this case) meet, if you have a bad day, you aren’t going to have a chance to compete for a title the following week.

With that knowledge in their back pockets, both the Holy Family boys and girls cross country teams did what they needed to do to punch their tickt to next weeks state meet at the Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs.

The boys placed all six of their runners in the top 12, led by senior Jack Culp’s fourth place finish in 16 minutes, 44 seconds, and cruised to a team victory with 35 points. Jefferson Academy was second with 51 and Prospect Ridge completed the City of Broomfield 1-2-3 finish with 83. All three teams qualify for next week.

The Tigers ran well as a pack. Just one second behind Culp was sophomore Anthony Haberkorn at 16:49. With a quick pace among the first wave of runners, the Tigers took advantage, getting top 10 finishes from juniors Micah Munoz (7th in 17:05) and Andrew Descalzo (10th in 17:46). Needing big showing from its fifth and sixth runners (and not necessarily on that given day) to maximize points, Holy Family’s five and six didn’t disappoint. Juniors Joe Silva (11th in 17:54) and Luke Hixson (12th in 17:57) rounded out the big day.

And as impressive as the boys were, you could argue the girls were that much better.

All five of the scoring runners for the Tigers finished in the top 10, led by Summer Norwell’s fifth place finish in 20:09. Evie Boyd (6th in 20:26), Alyssa Wells (7th in 20:36), Alyssa Jany (9th in 20:54) and Madi Tapp (10th in 20:57) all capped a huge final effort on a course that has been good to Holy Family all season long. Junior Elizabeth Boselli finished 11th in 21:06.

As of right now, the boys race is scheduled to start at noon next week in Colorado Springs and the girls would follow at 12:45 p.m. Stay tuned for any potential changes as the weeks moves along.
