BROOMFIELD — Step one of the journey is complete.
The No. 3-seeded Holy Family Tigers took care of business in the first round of the Class 4A state softball tournament on Tuesday, dispatching of No. 13 Mesa Ridge in just over and hour by a score of 13-0.
Holy Family advances to Thursday’s second round, where they will clash with Northern Colorado Athletics Conference foe Silver Creek at 3:30 p.m. The Tigers have beaten the Raptors twice this season, including last Saturday’s epic 4-3 10-inning conference championship game. Sixth-seeded Silver Creek beat Pueblo Central 3-0.
The Tigers jumped on the Colorado Springs Metro South champion Grizzlies early and often. A big six run first inning highlighted by Jenna Pfenning’s grand slam was more than the Tigers needed.
In all, Holy Family pounded 11 hits — Pfenning had three and Toni Schafer two — against Grizzlies starter Isabella Quintana, whose defense committed six errors behind her.
Holy Family head coach Moriah Nguyen had the luxury of giving her starting pitcher Cassidy Chvatal an extra day of rest and instead threw Jaelen Giron. And the senior was phenomenal, pitching four perfect innings and striking our four in the process.
