Girls Varsity Softball · Softball: Tigers make quick work of Wildcats

BROOMFIELD — It is important to have a little perspective when going though a part of your schedule that might not be as daunting as some of the other games.

Take for instance, Tuesday’s Northern Colorado Athletic Conference game against Greeley Central. The Wildcats came in just 1-7 overall and 0-2 inside the league and huge underdogs against No. 3 Holy Family. Sure it looks like an easy victory on paper, but the Wildcats command just as much respect as any other team would expect nothing less from the Tigers in return.

So maybe as expected, Holy Family took care of business with a mercy-run rule shortened 16-0 victory over the Wildcats to improve to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC.

After a quick 1-2-3 top of the first from Cassidy Chvatal, in which she threw 12 pitches en route to striking out the side, the Holy Family bats went to work against Greeley Central starter Emma Johnston.

There weren’t a lot of hard hit balls, but the Tigers seemed to find a lot of opening in the Wildcats defense … hitting the ball where they weren’t. Holy Family got run scoring hits from Tyler Whitlock, Ava Kuszak, Abby Edwards, Jenna Pfenning and Lindsey Deau in a seven run first inning.

Jaelen Giron made her return to the lineup after an injury kept her out last week and she came in and struck out the side in the second inning to pick up where Chvatal left off.

The offense put up nine more runs in the second inning, taking advantage of walks, two hit by pitches and a few Greeley Central errors. The Tigers scored their 16 runs on just nine hits, and only Kuszak recorded a multi-hit game.

Giron struck out two more in the third inning to finish with five total and allowed just the one hit in her return.

Holy Family will be back it on Thursday against Centaurus at 3:30 p.m.
