BROOMFIELD — The Holy Family cross country team is about to enter the biggest week of their young and shortened season.
Looming on the schedule next week, in addition to trip to Greeley for a meet on Friday, is the pre-state meet Saturday at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs on the same course the season will one month later.
Once again subscribing to the notion that his runners compete every other week, Tigers coach Charles Shapiro stuck to the routine will have his ‘A’ team ready for the big one next Saturday.
Taking nothing away from the Tigers that competed on yet another warm Friday evening on their home course, both teams again held their own, with the boys finishing second, with 42 points, behind a very good Mead (29) team and the girls finished fourth.
Leading the way for the boys in the first heat was Anthony Haberkorn, who finished third overall in a time of 17 minutes, 49 seconds. Joe Silva was next at 18:21 and Luke Hixson rounded out the top three in the first heat with a time of 18:30.
In the second heat, C.J. O’Neill once again proved he has the chops to compete. The junior, who lost his fall soccer season and is competing in cross country for the first time, won his heat in 18:53.
Daniella Hren was the fastest of the girls in the first girls heat, crossing the line in 24:41. Sydeney Howorko (25:03) and Kiara Kingsley (25:14), who won the second heat race in the first meet of the season, completed the top three.
The second set of five, in heat two, ran as a pack and all five times were within 45 second of each other. Lizzbeth Villalobos was the quickest of the Tigers in 26:13.
