(13) HOLY FAMILY (5-5) VS. (4) PALMER RIDGE (8-2)
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Don Breese Stadium (Campus of Lewis-Palmer High School)
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN HOLY FAMILY HAS THE BALL
The Tigers have been methodical on offense all year long. They have been able to mix the run with Trevin Johnson and the pass with quarterback Calahan Carter with efficiency. Carter has a multitude of weapons, including six receivers (including Johnson) that have caught 15 or more passes this season. The big key for the Tigers on Friday will be trying to control the line of scrimmage with their big offensive line, led by junior Cord Kringlen. Can they give Carter enough time to throw the ball and can they open up the holes for Johnson.
They will have to keep their eye on Palmer Ridge junior linebacker Saxon Wright, who lead the Bears with 106 total tackles, including seven tackles for loss. The defending Class 3A champion Bears have registered 24 sacks this season, once again led by Wright with six. And there is plenty to worry about in the Palmer Ridge secondary as well. The Bears have 19 interceptions, led by junior Marcellus Reed’s five and Kieran Fry’s four.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN PALMER RIDGE HAS THE BALL
The Bears present a bunch of match-up nightmares, as witnessed by their 44 points per game output this season. Quarterback Luke McAllister has completed 61 percent of his passes this season, including 39 to his favorite target Anthony ‘Deuce’ Roberson — who is drawing interest from the University of Tennessee. Palmer Ridge can also run it behind senior tailback Raef Ruel, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his last three seasons.
The big question for the Holy Family defense will be can they put pressure on McAllister and get the Bears out of rhythm. Junior Justin Trostel leads the Tigers with 76 total tackles from his linebacker position and is followed closely by junior Benito Hernandez. The secondary, led by Peters and Jack Bertagnolli, will have to be on their toes all night.
