Boys Varsity Football · Football: Tigers roll Nighthawks to keep playoff hopes alive

BROOMFIELD — Just take care of business boys and let the chips fall where they may.

After eight weeks the Holy Family Tigers were a pedestrian 3-5 and coming off back-to-back lopsided losses to North Metro League front runners Frederick and Mead. And despite that, there they were lingering at No. 15 in the latest Class 3A RPI rankings, which would have them in the 16-team playoff field.

On Friday night, the Tigers did what they needed to do to keep their proverbial hat in the playoff ring with a solid 42-14 win over Northfield, dropping the visiting Nighthawks to 0-4 in the league and 1-8 overall.

The win for Holy Family, which might not do much to change its RPI status this week, improves them to 4-5 overall and now 2-2 inside league play.

The Tigers took advantage of an undermanned Northfield side early and often, making the most out of the short fields that were created by a defense that was able to pin its ears back and create havoc against the youthful Nighthawks.

The first score of the night came on the legs of quarterback Calahan Carter, whose 10-yard scamper up the middle after a beautiful fake to running-back Trevin Johnson had the Tigers up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game.

Carter, who would go just 7-for-9 for 107 yards in a game that had the running clock (40 point lead) by halftime, threw the first of his three touchdown passes just three minutes later to Liam Gray, who high-pointed a 20-yard fade pass just inside the pylon.

Benton Daniels (19 yard touchdown reception), Johnson (10 yard run), Jacob Lawver (23 yard interception return) and Braedon Peters (12 yard reception) would all find the end zone in the 28 point second quarter that kept the clock running for the entirety of the second half.

It was a second half that gave the Tigers plenty of opportunities to have some of their younger players get some valuable playing time, and the highlight of the second half was junior Connor Lee’s interception.

In the fourth quarter, Lee picked off Nighthawks quarterback Travie Craddock at his own 20-yard line and nearly took it back to the house before being dragged down inside the 10-yard line and setting off the Baby Shark antics.

The Tigers will wrap up the regular season next Friday night at home against Skyview (3-6, 1-3), a 48-12 loser to Frederick, at 7 p.m. at Mike G. Gabriel Stadium. The Tigers will them await their playoff fate on the following Monday when the CHSAA releases the playoff brackets.
