Boys Varsity Football · Football: Tigers lose wild one at Skyline

LONGMONT — Holy Family had its chances on Thursday night at Everly Montgomery Field.

But in an entertaining, back-and-forth game with the Skyline Falcons — who went all the way to the Class 4A state title game last year at Mile High Stadium — saw the home team make one more play in a wild fourth quarter that saw them hold on for a 35-34 nonleague win.

The Tigers (2-3) took the lead to the locker rooms on the strength of three Calahan Carter touchdown passes to three different receivers. He hooked up with Liam Gray (15 yards), Braedon Peters (4) and Ben Nappe (92) in the opening 24 minutes and had 253 yards passing at the break.

But Skyline and quarterback Chase Silva led the Falcons back with the next two scores in the second half, hitting Austin Robison from 10 yards out in the third quarter for the third of his four touchdown tosses that put Skyline 21-20.

Mike McKrola would score on a two yard run early in the fourth to make it a 28-20 game.

It would set up what would be a wild final four minutes.

With 3:57 to play, Trevin Johnson — who also finished with 113 yards rushing — caught a 17 yard pass from Carter that was followed up with a Carter to Taylor Johnson 2-pt. conversion.

28-28.

It didn’t take Skyline long to respond. Silva to Grayden Bridwell for 62-yards and the Falcons were back in from 35-28.

All of 19 seconds later, Holy Family responded one more time. Johnson took it in from 24 yards out around the right end and the Tigers were an extra point away from potentially forcing overtime.

Coach Mike Gabriel and his staff had already predetermined that they would go for 2-points and the win, and it looked to be a successful play when Carter hooked up with Matt Mollendor in the corner, but Benton Daniels was called for offensive pass interference and it backed the Tigers up 15 yards. Holy Family tried one more time from 18 yards out, but Peters couldn’t hang on near the pylon.

There were some staggering numbers in this one offensively for the Tigers, including Carter, who finished 21-for-31 for 476 yards and four touchdowns. Nappe caught nine balls for 282 yards.
