Tigers News · Basketball doubleheader: Blue collar wins against Roosevelt

BROOMFIELD — There were moments on Thursday night against Roosevelt that both head coaches, Ron Rossi (girls) and Pete Villecco (boys), could have easily lost their minds.

Neither team played exceptionally crisp basketball for 32 minutes, but when all was said and done, both efforts were good enough for victories. The girls opened the night with a 65-50 win over the RoughRiders and the boys followed it up with a 66-42 victory.

The girls went to the locker room at halftime up just 27-22 against a young Roosevelt squad that entered the game at 8-8 and just 3-6 in the TVL.

Did they hear from Rossi?

“It lasted for about 30 seconds,” sophomore Genavieve Gudino said. “And then he just told us what we needed to do as team. That we were just getting frazzled and not playing like we usually do.”

And much like they did on Tuesday night in Fort Morgan, the Tigers (12-5 overall and 10-1 in the Tri-Valley) found their chemistry in the third quarter and created some separation. Seven different players scored in the quarter, led by Gudino’s seven. She would eventually finish with a season-high 25 points.

“I think it is just that we don’t play together in the first half and then we just realize we have to pick it up as a team and that is how we roll,” said Gudino, whose team is not going to get caught looking ahead to Windsor next week. “We are really prepping ourselves for that, nut we know if we want to beat them, we have to be on our ‘A’ game.”

Amanda Ward also had a big night, finishing with 15 points.

On the boys side, the Tigers led for a majority of the game, but it always felt a little tenuous. Roosevelt would make little runs to keep it interesting, but the big three combo of Kyle Helbig (13 points), Tanner Baird (25) and Adam Jolly (16) had a big offensive night — combining for 54 of the teams 66 points — in the victory.

“For us it starts on the defensive end and I was pleased with our defensive effort. They made a lot of shots and we still worked,” said Villecco, whose team improved to 15-3 overall and 10-1 in the TVL. “To beat a team like that by 24 and shoot as poorly from the perimeter is a positive.

“We were able to get stops and get out in transition. Kyle and Adam were really active on the boards and had multiple put-backs. That’s us at our best, when we put together stops and we run with a purpose.”

In one of the more bizarre stat lines you will see in any high school game, the Tigers didn’t make a single 3-pointer on Thursday night. All 26 field goals were 18 feet and in.
