Tigers News · Girls basketball: Tigers breeze by Fort Morgan

BROOMFIELD — Early January high school basketball can be a crapshoot.

And while Saturday afternoon’s 61-29 Tri Valley league decision over Fort Morgan looked like a dominant performance, you must remember that the beauty of it is in the eye of the beholder and in this case, that is head coach Ron Rossi — who was quick to point out some flaws.

The first half was anything but a work of art. There were plenty of missed opportunities on the offensive end and even in a dominant second half, Rossi could easily point to the 10 third quarter turnovers.

An no, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. After all it was a 30+ point victory against a team that stellar defense, and Rossi was quick to point out his teams defensive effort.

“That’s what Holy Family is all about, that defensive effort,” said Rossi, whose team got back to .500 at 4-4 and is now 2-0 in the TVL. “That energy helps us out offensively and I was really pleased with that.

“They had 14 points at half and we didn’t execute very well in the first half, but in the second half the ball movement was better, the player movement was better and we shared the ball.”

The much needed separation for the Tigers came in the third quarter. A 13-1 run saw the lead balloon from 25-14 at the half to 38-15 rather quickly. The Tigers showed off their depth in the third, with eight different players scoring.

Cecelia Aanerud lead the balanced attack with 13 points and Tyler Whitlock finished with 12. Genavieve Gudion chipped in with 11.

“They are a good defensive club and we just found a way to attack them when the game got going there,” said Rossi, whose team forced 11 third quarter turnovers and 24 in all. “But it all goes back to the defensive pressure.”

Holy Family will look to stay perfect in the TVL on Tuesday in Johnstown against Roosevelt.
